I agree Christine. Despite all the very tough times that farmers have been going through, they still continue to donate along with the many church groups to help feed the less fortunate around the world.

The Canadian Foodbanks Program truly is a testament to farmers selfless efforts to feed the world.
Our church is involved in this program and I am a true believer in it, I am happy to hear that it is doing so well despite current economic situations.

Thank you very much for your comments Melissa!
I believe that just a few weeks ago it was discovered our Canadian flags were being purchased from China for Queen's Park!
That has now been corrected too.
Buy Canadian eh!

Thanks for mentioning us Terry.

I completely agree that the Gov't should be sourcing Locally-made or locally grown food for its public institutions. To that I would add that it should be as much at the Federal level as the Provincial.

The Gov't should also always be considering products from Canadian-made manufacturers first too. Recently, the Ontario Gov't came under fire because of Ontario flags being made in China instead of Canada, which come on... is a no-brainer. http://www.google.com/hostednews/canadianpress/article/ALeqM5jQ8o3Sm-rQSKOsbaKfhaatsyxrPQ

Here at Buy Canadian First, we always say it's not about buying Canadian always, because that's just impossible, but rather to consider Canadian-made products *first* and then look to other countries if the options are not viable.

Hi Christine,
It was great meeting you and the rest of the cohort last week. You sure didn't look nervous to me! I learned a lot too by watching your presentations. You all had great idea's for your communication campaigns.
Keep up the good work!

Designations without publicly listed, audited, qualifications are often used as euphemistic "bait and switches".

There is no reason why private designations with published standards cannot be of value to consumers.

In the context of "Made in"/"Grown In"/"Product of" Canada (and its communities), many consumers want to know the corporate ownership tree, labour practices, environmental practices, and business histories as much as the product/component origins.

This is where a private designation can offer more.

This post reminds me of the disgraceful Cellared In Canada designation for "domestic" wines. Vinifera grape farmers in Niagara tell me this provision, which basically promotes mediocrity by allowing a disproportionate amount of foreign swill to be mixed with Ontario juice, is killing small business, making a mockery of attempts to position Ontario as a serious winemaker, and confusing the daylights out of consumers. The reason Ontario tolerates it is because it's money in the bank for Niagara's big two industrial, influential wineries. They should be ashamed of such deception.
